SENSEI LOUIS GRADY
I was once asked as a ninth grader what I wanted to be when I grew up... even at that young age I immediately responded that I wanted to be a karate instructor! The year 2016 now marks 22 years that I have taught martial arts full time. It is who I am, what I do, and has been for a great deal of my life. I love teaching, coaching, leading students, sharing the knowledge that I have been privileged to have acquired from some of the greatest martial artist in the world. I've had the honor of learning from such greats as Richard Bustillo, Dan Inosanto, Larry Hartsell, Ted Wong, Gokor Chivichyan, Gene LeBell, Rigan and Jean Jacques Machado, Chai Sirisute, Bobby Taboada, Cacoy Canete, Leo Giron, Rich Aughtry and many more.
I've dedicated my life to the Japanese concept of "Kaizen" - commitment to continuous improvement. I've earned Master Instructor levels in JKD and Kaizen Karate Do, Full Qualified Instructor in Balintawak, Black Belts in USJA Jujitsu, Tae Kwon Do, Doce Pares, and others, plus being ranked or trained in other arts such as Muay Thai, Shotokan Karate, Judo, Aiki jujitsu, Capoeira, and several Japanese and Filipino weapons systems. I've taught ages as young as 3 all the way to my oldest student to date, who started at 74! Everyone from children needing self confidence, to adults with fitness and weight loss goals, or the desire to feel safe in their own ability to handle themselves in this sometimes dangerous world we live in, up to amateur and professional fighters striving to test themselves in a ring or a cage against an opponent- I've helped them all reach their goals!
The first school I taught full time at was Martial Arts America (1994) where I was the head instructor and program director in charge of developing curriculum and furthering the martial education of myself and all the students of a multi-school operation. When an opportunity to take over ownership of the school that I had started arose I took a leap of faith and thus was born The IMB Family Martial Arts Center which I owned and operated solely until about 2010 when a great friend and fellow martial artist, Paul Booe and I merged our two schools into our fantasy super school, Hayastan/IMB MMA! We weathered the trials and tribulations of co-owning up to three schools at once (renamed simply Hayastan MMA) until I was deployed early in 2015.
I returned to the USA after serving in the Middle East for nearly a year and like many others deeply feel the loss of my great friend and partner Paul Booe. The legacy he and I created is being carried on by some phenomenal martial artists, I love my Hayastan brothers and sisters but my path has led me to simplifying my operation and getting back to basics.
That being the case, Grady's Warrior Arts Reality System (WAR system) has been founded and I am so excited to continue working with and helping others achieve their fullest potential! I have also strived to improve my teaching ability and completed a lateral entry teaching/ education program around 2004, building upon my communications degree from Wingate university (where I tutored public speaking, as well as working several extra jobs to put myself through college). I was also a elementary and middle school teacher, full and part time status for a total of 16 years. I taught Physical Education, Health, and Leadership for K-8. I developed and spearheaded an interactive leadership/mentoring program called BUD-E (Be Understanding Dedicated and Energetic) into the middle school environment that I had been using for at least a decade in my martial arts program, and it was a resounding success! I had an additional responsibility as the Security Advisor for the school and worked with the CMPD to develop risk assessment and response as well as lockdown procedures for the safety of students and faculty.
I am also a proud member of the North Carolina Army National Guard. I originally enlisted back in 1989 as a Field Artilleryman and soon graduated Officer Candidate School and achieved the rank of Captain before resigning my commission to dedicate more of my time to the martial arts teaching that I so loved. I missed the camaraderie, the brotherhood, the combative mindset of the American Warrior Class so a couple years ago I re-enlisted and currently am a NCO, and just returned from a deployment in the Middle East (where I was also teaching combatives classes to a mixture of Army, Navy and Marines on my down time!). The esprit de corps between the military and martial arts are very akin to one another, and I look forward to growing my WAR system family, with you as part of it! - Louis Grady
